A Total Pro

March 15, 2010

I’m envious of people who do what they really love and — and here’s the really very important condition — get paid a comfortable, livable wage. I can’t think of anything I’m truly passionate about that also pays well.

I caught myself watching a program on the History channel for a minute a couple of weeks about piranhas. Apparently, there’s this guy who works for the Missouri Department of Conservation who, among other odd things, counts the number of piranhas in the Ozarks. He rides around in a boat, sets fish traps and then catalogs the fish his traps catch. And so far, he hasn’t found a single piranha. I couldn’t have made up that piranha counter job, but it exists and if I knew it existed sooner, maybe I would have prepared myself to do that for a living.

Also, just today, I read about a woman who’s opening a jewelry-making workshop and boutique where she’s also going to give classes to teach students how to sell their stuff on Etsy. How hard is that? And I once thought Sell Your Stuff on eBay stores were a stupid idea.

These jobs prove you can make a living doing literally anything, so there’s no reason for me to be unsatisfied with a job. But part of my problem (admittedly, the smaller part of my problem) is that I can’t think of an obscure but satisfying area to explore new employment.

There is, apparently, such a thing called a “personal shopper”. That’s a real job! The rich and lazy can hire someone to shop for them — they’ll pick out clothes or find furniture or whatever for their client.

I’ve considered it and think I finally found my new profession. I want to become a Gift Consultant. You tell me a little about the person I’m shopping for and your budget and I’ll find the right gift for the occasion. You have consultants of all kinds in all fields and it’s an area of expertise that so far hasn’t been tapped for profit, but I think there’s a real market for it.

Don’t think I’m getting into this without a solid resume. I’m already racking up an impressive role call of satisfied present recipients. Listen to this testimonial from a satisfied customer:

Happy 4th Birthday, Avi!

Halloween

September 30, 2009

Avi decided that she wants to be a bumble bee for Halloween this year and that her sister, Lilly, should go as honey. I need to sit down for a minute. The overwhelming cuteness is making me light-headed.

One More Niece

June 20, 2009

I did it! I had another niece today! It was a lot of work for me, but I think it was worth it.

I only have a few pictures so far and these are the only ones that don’t require pixelated censor editing.
